Recognised For Sustainability: Magrock Wins Planet Mark Action and Innovation Award

Magrock is delighted to have been named a winner of the Planet Mark Action and Innovation Award 2026, recognising the company's commitment to sustainability throughout the delivery of Indurent Park, Access 18 Avonmouth.

Indurent Park is Magrock's largest project to date. Delivered under a design and build contract, the premium industrial and logistics development sits within a sustainably designed environment. The scheme comprises four industrial units providing approximately 230,000 sq ft of space, complete with integrated office accommodation and extensive external works across the full site. Each unit was designed and built to Indurent's high specification, achieving BREEAM Excellent across the board, with delivery managed under a strict, embodied carbon management plan

Located adjacent to Avonmouth Docks, the site sits on a tidal estuary, where soft, variable ground conditions would conventionally call for traditional piled foundations, an approach that carries a significant embodied carbon cost in concrete and steel.

The project’s strict upfront carbon limits placed significant pressure on Magrock’s design team to identify a solution that could both achieve structural performance and deliver meaningful carbon savings. The combination of extreme ground conditions and ambitious net zero targets created a complex constraint that required a fundamental rethinking of traditional engineering approaches.

Rather than defaulting to convention, Magrock adopted a transformative low-carbon foundation strategy, replacing deep piling with a Controlled Modulus Column (CMC) solution, a ground improvement technique that strengthens the soil itself rather than by passing it. With no established precedent for using CMC systems in such soft tidal conditions, the approach demanded a rigorous, evidence-led process of investigation and testing before construction began.

The result was a solution that delivered the required structural performance, verified through extensive testing, while using substantially less material than traditional piling and a fraction of the carbon. It achieved verified savings of more than 250 tonnes of CO₂e and approximately £4million in cost, and supports a design intended to provide a 50-year lifespan. Replicable, scalable and commercially viable, the approach offers a blueprint for lower-carbon construction wherever challenging ground conditions demand it.

Planet Mark's judges recognised Magrock for the combination that sits at the heart of the Action and Innovation Award: genuine technical innovation, decarbonisation outcomes backed by clear, quantified data, and a commercial result that proved sustainability and profitability were never in competition on this project. What stood out most was the approach's wider potential, proof that lower-carbon construction methods can succeed on the industry's most challenging sites, offering a model the sector can build on.

Magrock will collect the award at the Planet Mark Sustainability Summit, taking place at the Barbican Centre on Tuesday 3^rd November.
